See Move Website: http://gamerthemovie.com/

GAMER is a high-concept action thriller set in a near future when gaming and entertainment have evolved into a terrifying new hybrid. Humans control other humans in mass-scale, multi-player online games: people play people…for keeps. Mind-control technology is widespread, and at the heart of the controversial games is its creator, reclusive billionaire Ken Castle (Michael C. Hall). His latest brainchild, the first-person shooter game “Slayers,” allows millions to act out their most savage fantasies online in front of a global audience, using real prisoners as avatars with whom they fight to the death.

Coming September 2009

THE BURROWERS

At the Forest Ridge Mall, head of security Ronnie Barnhardt (Seth Rogen) patrols his jurisdiction with an iron fist, combating skateboarders, shoplifters and the occasional unruly customer while dreaming of the day when he can swap his flashlight for a badge and a gun. His delusions of grandeur are put to the test when the mall is struck by a flasher. Driven to protect and serve the mall and its patrons, Ronnie seizes the opportunity to showcase his underappreciated law enforcement talents on a grand scale, hoping his solution of this crime will earn a coveted spot at the police academy and the heart of his elusive dream girl Brandi, the hot make-up counter clerk who won’t give him the time of day. But his single-minded pursuit of glory launches a turf war with the equally competitive Detective Harrison of the Conway Police, and Ronnie is confronted with the challenge of not only catching the flasher, but getting him before the real cops do.

Film Crew Sends a big “THANK YOU” to the Legistators of New Mexico “With Live video and pictures”

group-21

erica-wess

erica-w-shilaStory by Erica Viking,

Photos by Gabriel Saavedra

This week a wave of black-clad movie folks filed off the Rail Runner train en masse, making their way through downtown Santa Fe streets, ending their trek of solidarity at the Roundhouse, intent on making a lasting impression with their lawmakers. And that they did. The hundreds of marchers gathered for three reasons: to thank the legislature for it’s support over the recent years, to announce groundbreaking education initiatives for New Mexico’s kids, and to set the stage for a little breaking news involving an important political endorsement. They came to strengthen old bonds, and test some new ones.

The film workers milled and mingled outside waiting for the press conference…many held signs, with sayings like “MOVIES MAKE NEW MEXICO MONEY” and “I BOUGHT A HOUSE…THANK YOU!” holding them up for a film crew making a mini-movie of the march. Moving through the crowd with my assistant Gabriel and my little Flip-video recorder, I noticed people meeting up with old friends and colleagues, apparently making up for all that “QUIET ON THE SET!!!!!” time by laughing and talking loudly…really loudly at times. But thanks to a bellowing Hendry, the clamor soon gave way to the business side of things as everyone’s attention turned towards the press conference, being held to announce some education initiatives that have been an industry dream for years.

Deputy Secretary for the Public Education Department, Dr. Catherine Cross-Maple, announced the bold move to ensure movie-makers keep hiring locally for years to come. She unveiled the new program initiative which has been six months in the making; a collaboration of her department, the Department of Higher Education and I.A.T.S.E. local 480. The partnership provides new coursework and training for state high school and higher education students in film and media. Cross-Maple says “Research shows that 5,989 direct film, media and ancillary jobs were created in NM in 2007. In addition to the many New Mexicans that already work in this lucrative industry, our state’s high school students, when provided with proper training and education, can fill many of these positions as well.” She then announced the premiere of a recently-produced PSA to promote I.A.T.S.E.’s new partnership with the education department: providing real-world film skills to students. The ad starts running this month and organizers hope the word will spread and the classes will fill up. Hendry also spoke during the conference: “We fix these streets, we build these schools…we provide the money that runs the State of New Mexico and we do our part and we are here today to say thank you to the people inside, for the opportunities they have given us. And we are here to say to the young people of New Mexico you no longer have to leave the state to make a decent living. “We’re gonna teach the next generation to make movies right alongside us.”

Hendry then “gently” urged the crowd back into the Roundhouse for the next phase of the day, which was to extend a message of gratitude to legislators who have had a direct hand in providing New Mexicans with high-paying jobs with retirement and benefits. They also hoped that their numbers would send a clear message to some legislators who still don’t see the tax rebate passed in 2002 as a good thing. This session, a bill was introduced by a freshman representative from Roswell that would eliminate the New Mexico film tax rebate. Representative Dennis Kintigh told Kob.com “In this day and age, with things as tight as they are…it’s inappropriate. It’s flat-wrong.” The New Mexico Film Office takes issue with that argument. Since 2002, the state has refunded 25-cents of every dollar spent by movies companies working in the state. Last year that totaled 46-million. But according to statistics at nmfilm.com, it doesn’t take a mathematician to tell you that it’s a fair trade. The estimated production activity for 2008/09 is in excess of $924 million….that means the state is taking home a pretty nice chunk of change. The state Film Office hopes those numbers don’t escape the legislature’s attention. They’ve let lawmakers know that the rebate is actually more needed than ever before. Ending the tax deal would put 200 New Mexico film service companies out of business, which costs the state about 9,000 jobs.

Inside the rotunda…the economic-impact evidence was everywhere. I saw grips. Hair and make-up. Stunt-men. Actors. Casting directors. Accountants and drivers and caterers and students electricians and studio bosses. All there for one reason: to support the lawmakers that supported them. They applauded Governor Richardson and Speaker of the House Ben Lujan, seen as driving forces behind movie industry development from the beginning and included people like Lisa Strout and Ann Lerner who run the NM Film Office and Albuquerque Film Office. And before it was all over Jon Hendry let loose that “surprise” he’d alluded to earlier in the press conference. He directly addressed actor Val Kilmer, who’s been quoted as saying he may run for Governor of New Mexico. He’s also been quoted saying that if he ran, he’d win. Jon said he hoped Kilmer, talented actor that he is, would make many more movies here in New Mexico…but as far as a run for Governor, Jon said, “We already have our candidate.” He then introduced Lt. Governor Diane Denish. She thanked NM’s film workers for their support in the past and their official endorsement as she announced her plan to become the next Governor of New Mexico. And judging by the standing ovation from the I.A.T.S.E-packed-room, it looks like they’re already picked their Top Gun.
